Persuasive Essay On Online Education

All About The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Online Learning

Nowadays, online learning turns out to be more and more practiced. Many traditional universities started to share their courses online for free. It represents an easy and comfortable method to achieve knowledge in almost every field, from law and accounting, to human sciences, such as psychology and sociology or history. Online learning is a great alternative to traditional universities, especially for people who can’t afford the time and money to take real courses. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of online learning?

Advantages Of Online Learning

Although many people still consider traditional universities as the best way to achieve knowledge and get a diploma, online learning proves to be a great alternative. Students have the chance to study in their own time and especially for free. It represents a great way to study many fields and to boost the level of self-motivation. Online learning is so effective because students can finish their homework quickly, and there is more time left for hobbies or for finding a job.

An access to all resources of a traditional course helps participants learn wherever they are, leaving them the freedom to choose the time for study. With basically an Internet connection, a person can attend different courses. Among the advantages of online learning there are the responsibility and self-discipline of students.

Disadvantages Of Online Learning

Only in a small group a person can develop properly. At school, students learn how to make friends, be patient, get rid of disappointment, and especially to compete. Competition between colleagues can be very stimulating and students will only benefit from it. Online learning cannot offer human interaction.

Another disadvantage refers to the fact that online courses cannot cope with thousands of students that try to join discussions. Also, online learning can be difficult, if it is meant for disciplines that involve practice.

In conclusion, online learning should be seen as a complement and extension of classical forms of learning. Not even the best online course can fully replace the personal contact with a teacher, or the human relationships that develop in a group. So, traditional classes shouldn’t be replaced with online learning.

Traditional Education Versus Online Education - With A Free Essay Review

Lorie Palacios; March 11, 2012; Comm/155 University Composition and Communication1; Instructor Dalanya Rae Bowman

In the world today nothing is more confusing than choosing for your education. Considering, there are different ways to access a higher education, it is clear to see that understanding your options of traditional and online programs can certainly help you decide which method best meets your needs and individual situation. In Fact, looking at the benefits each option offers can guide you in making a responsible educational decision on which program is right for you. Even though obtaining a traditional education can be beneficial and similar to online education, the flexibility, environment, and length of class makes online a better decision.

Looking further within the variables of flexibility, traditional education is considered to be very structured. The classes are set for specific times and days of the week without change. Undoubtedly, this can be very helpful when scheduling your everyday activities or goals. In addition, you know when you have to attend classes. In fact, attendance is a requirement; to receive an adequate lecture of course materials and information you need to be there to receive the appropriate knowledge to pass the class. Of course, disciplining yourself with your attendance, travel time to school, and organization of your life and education will guide you on a path to achieve a good traditional education. However, if a strict schedule through traditional education is more demanding of you, and you would prefer having a more flexible schedule, the convenience of online education would be the way to go. In fact, all class materials are obtainable online 7 days a week 24 hours a day. Therefore, students can access any reading materials, discussions, explanations, and comments whenever they need to. Moreover, from anywhere across the glob that has Internet access can students attend class any time. Therefore, students can attend to personal needs, family, or travel, and still have the pleasure of attending classes. In fact, this option is ideal for working students, single parents, or people who need a more flexible schedule. Considering online has no travel time or the problems of weather change, it is clear to see that the comfort of your home environment would pose greater advantage. Obviously, working at home or where ever you choose to pull out your computer and do your schoolwork; would be an enormous benefit. Of course, all you need is access to the Internet to log on to your campus website (virtual classroom), and you are ready to go. Consequently, you can work at your own pace; the thing is that through the week you need to answer five substantiated responses four days out of the week. Then answer three out of five discussion questions and do your assignment some time during that week. Each week starts on Monday and finishes on Sunday. Therefore, you can choose do all your work in the first part of the week or whenever it is convenient for your situation as long as it is done within that week. In conclusion, your work and discipline is your sole responsibility.

One of the most important decisions a person needs to make is whether they prefer an education to come from a traditional classroom within a campus facility or an online virtual classroom. Of course, a traditional classroom you are provided with face-to-face interaction with your instructor and classmates. In fact, traditional classes are more “hands on” than online, which offers access to equipment that can greatly enhance the learning experience for the student. However, the distractions, tiredness, and boredom within the classroom, depending upon the individuals within that class; certainly can be very hard to endure and disruptive at times. Furthermore, changing of classes, instructors, and fellow students within the whole facility can be as well just as hectic at times. On the other hand, you do have the opportunity to meet many individuals. Therefore, any social barriers that may exist can be overcome or may not even be there. Nevertheless, with online education you can choose to be more comfortable by establishing your education from within your own home or desired location. However, it is solely through the Internet that you can access your schoolwork via a virtual classroom/blackboard. In addition, through the web (Internet) you can also meet all kinds of different people from all over the world. Furthermore, online universities hire only instructors with the best academics and who have real life experience to back up their credentials. Unfortunately, you do not have face-to-face interaction with your instructors or classmates however, you are able to communicate with them through the classroom forums (threads). Moreover, students can talk to their instructors openly through chats, e-mail, and classroom discussions, without the inconvenience of waiting for opened business hours. In fact, the online environment makes approaching an instructor less intimidating by providing students with a level playing field undisturbed by bias. Above all every student has a say, not just the most talkative. Undoubtedly, the communication is through writing your responses and posting them in the classroom forum. Consequently, the problem with strictly writing is the tone within your writing. Granted, you are writing responses to fellow students, and they are learning right alongside you; your instructors and classmates are your peers. Therefore, it is important to write in academic formal writing. The importance of this is because your instructor and classmates are not visibly able to see you so, any misinterpretation of the meaning of what was written is easy to do. In addition, online writing can easily be miscommunicated so, it is important to be accurate when writing. Thus, online communication is solely through writing therefore, it is crucial to be clear and concise so that you can achieve academic success.

When trying to achieve academic success, the time it takes to accomplish your education is an enormous benefit you need to consider. Therefore, when considering which educational path best suits your individual needs, it is important to acquire the length of classes (time frame) required by both traditional and online education. Furthermore, when considering attending traditional schools, you need to look at how many classes you can take at one time. Unfortunately, traditional school’s have a maximum of 12 credits per semester, the facilitator’s fear that with more classes a student will become overloaded. Nevertheless, in a traditional education, in a semester the classes do not change and are one hour long if not more; a semester is five to six months. In addition, traditional education takes a student attending full time four to six years to receive an Associate’s degree, if not more. However, if you suddenly have pressing matters that you need to attend to, it is next to impossible to hold your courses when attending a traditional university. Granted, through traditional education you can receive an Associate’s in reasonable time. On the other hand, a person attending online classes could receive the same degree in half the time. Hence, online education would be the way to go. Because, you have two separate classes for nine weeks, which are four classes a semester, online classes are considered much faster. Undoubtedly, an online student can successfully receive an Associate’s degree in just two years. In fact, online universities do allow a temporary freeze of two to four weeks of classes. Obviously, that sounds much better to me. In addition, online education is just as equally accredited as that of a traditional education but, in less time, and with fewer classes; at one time.

The ultimate decision an individual makes in their education should be determined by their own situation and which method best meets their own needs. Even though traditional education has been the leading method for obtaining a higher education for many years, it is very time consuming, structured, and disciplined. With all due respect, traditional education has been very beneficial and successful throughout many years. However, times have changed, and the Internet is growing faster than ever. Furthermore, through the Internet, online education has increased the quality of education by flexibility, comfortable environment, and length of classes (faster). Therefore, online has proven to divulge the equal quality of knowledge and growth than that of traditional education but, in half the time. In addition, choosing to receive an education online can harvest a motivation in a student’s education that can benefit the learning required to know and understand the knowledge needed in the world today for the success of a higher education.

The essay as a whole is quite poorly organized and made up of long, disorganized paragraphs. The poor organization lends itself to needless repetition and lack of argumentative focus. Here's an obvious way to organize your essay:

1. Decide on three or four (or more) topics for comparison. In a sense, you've already done this, but your topics are scattered in a desultory fashion throughout the essay. So

2. Devote each paragraph to a single topic.

3. Devote the first sentence of each paragraph to task of identifying the topic. (Note the first sentence should also serve the function of constituting a transition from the previous paragraph).

4. Come to a conclusion about which form of education is more advantageous in relation to the individual topic discussed in the paragraph.

5. Come to a conclusion, at the end of the essay, about the overall value of online vs. traditional education.

6. Revise your introduction and include in it a thesis that reflects what your essay ends up arguing about the relative merits of online and traditional education.

Finally, let make one or two specific points about the content of your essay. Your essay tends to focus on the following three topics for the sake of your comparison: Convenience; Educational environment; Time to completion of degree (note: a university student should normally expect to finish a Bachelor's degree in four years or so, not an Associate’s degree). A few issues I would have expected you to address include: cost of education, college life, and perceived value (or reputation) of traditional education.

With respect to the last point, you do mention in passing the credentials of online instructors but since you don't talk about the quality of instructors in traditional schools, or about perceptions of quality, the point is not immediately relevant to the comparison you want to make. I don't know if you are in a position to make such a comparison but it seems obvious enough to an insider like me that traditional schools still attract professors with better academic qualifications (which doesn't make them necessarily better teachers). You point out that online schools are accredited (which is true of some, not all, such schools) but since accreditation affords only a baseline measure of competence, the point is not very helpful for deciding the value of online education. Perhaps one thing to keep in mind is that the situation with respect to the quality of online education is changing quickly. Every year more and more universities are offering online courses that compete with the existing commercial entities and generally improve the quality of online education. There are also new business start-ups in this area and relatively new non-profit organizations that enable self-directed study online, such as the Khan Academy, which doesn't yet, as far as I know, offer accredited courses, but that fact may not matter in the future as much as it does today. One of the problems with your essay is that it speaks of online education as though it were a homogeneous entity. It sounds like you are speaking from experience, and that you are assuming that all online education is as you have experienced. That kind of assumption is not really justified (and obviously you don't try to justify it in your essay). For what it's worth, such an assumption of homogeneity would also not be justified in the case of traditional education: not all brick and mortar schools are the same.

Best, EJ.
